Knowing which is which — before you surrender — is the difference between a family that stays covered and one that discovers a lapse at the worst possible moment.
Health insurance through an employer typically ends with employment. Individual policies continue only if premiums keep being paid, and many families have no mechanism to pay them. Life insurance usually continues but can lapse silently. Auto coverage on a vehicle nobody drives may be reducible rather than cancellable — cancel it outright and the next policy costs considerably more.
Meanwhile the household left behind often needs more coverage, not less, at exactly the moment household income has fallen.
What happens when employment ends, COBRA viability and cost, marketplace and Medicaid options for the remaining household, and coverage restart planning for release. Federal inmates receive care through BOP, but the family outside still needs a plan.
Whether existing policies continue, how premiums get paid from a reduced household budget, beneficiary review, and whether coverage is adequate for a family that has just lost an income.
Homeowners or renters coverage on a property that may sit empty — vacancy clauses can void a policy without anyone realizing. Auto coverage reduction rather than cancellation to protect future rates.
What continues, what suspends, and what needs to be formally notified to avoid a rescission or a claim denial later.
Insurance is licensed at state level — there is no federal license. AFIP operates through a Designated Responsible Licensed Producer and licensed producers appointed in the states where we do business, carrying errors and omissions coverage.
Where a client is Medicare-eligible, producers hold the required CMS and AHIP certification. Marketplace enrollment assistance requires separate federal registration, which we maintain where applicable.
Availability. AFIP can only advise on and place insurance in states where it holds active licensure and carrier appointments. Where we are not licensed, we will say so and point you to an unaffiliated licensed professional at no cost.
Reinstating lapsed coverage is harder and more expensive than maintaining it.
